Mapastown Bridge — Report the wrong picture

Single-arch stone road bridge over River Glyde, built c. 1820. Ashlar limestone walling to parapet, rock-faced limestone string course, tooled limestone coping. Segmental-headed arch, rock-faced voussoirs, prominent keystone; arch flanked by rock-faced piers, finely tooled limestone caps. Rubble stone flanking wall to south-east and north-west, finely tooled coping to north-west. Modern tarmacadamed roadway.

Constructed in a traditional manner, this simply designed bridge is made more interesting by the textural variation applied with the ashlar limestone parapet contrasting with the rock-faced limestone arch and string course. The presence of rubble walling to south suggests possibility of more structural activity in the past. Mapastown Bridge is not only of technical interest but is an attractive structural addition to the roadway and the riverscape.
