Discover Alone

Privacy

This page says what Discover Alone saves about you, why, and how to have it removed. Questions go to rickie@discoveralone.com.

When you look at the map or a place page

The website keeps a record of each page asked for: the internet address it came from, the browser name it sent, the page, the page you came from and the time. This is used to count visits, to tell people from robots, and to stop abuse. The internet address may be looked up to find a rough town or country.

When you tap, scroll or type on a page, your browser sends a short note saying so. To tell one visit from the next, a random number is kept in your own browser's storage. It is not your name and is not shared with anyone.

If you search for a place by its name or address, the words you typed are sent to the website to find it.

If you make an account

We keep your email address, the name you choose to show, your password (scrambled, never stored as typed), your picture if you add one, the places you save, and the messages you send. A small file called a cookie keeps you signed in for up to 30 days.

If you add a picture, story, tip or place

What you send is kept and checked. Once accepted, it is shown on the place page with the name you chose. Do not send pictures of other people without their permission.

Other websites the pages use

The map drawing comes from OpenStreetMap. Some pictures load straight from the websites that hold them, such as Wikimedia Commons, Geograph and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. The page lettering comes from Google Fonts. Those websites see your internet address when your browser asks them for these things. The Bring Me There button opens Google Maps.

What we do not do

No advertising, no selling or passing on of your details, no tracking across other websites.

Having your details removed

Email rickie@discoveralone.com and ask. Your account, pictures and messages will be deleted. You can also ask for a copy of what is saved about you.
