In former pasture under the Limerick Southern Ring Road 20m from the townland boundary with Ballysimon. The excavation of a levelled fulacht fia under licence No. 01E0484, identified during monitoring of topsoil stripping, was undertaken prior to the construction of the Limerick Southern Ring Road in June 2001 (Collins 2001; Collins 2003, 242-3). The site was noted as a spread of burnt material (dims. 10m by 8m) centred on a trough feature. The sub-rectangular trough contained the trace of one timber, 1.43m in length, in a very poor state of preservation. Two modern drains were cut into the fulacht fia mound; both were filled with burnt stone. It appeared that the fulacht fia had been levelled during localised land reclamation (Collins 2003, 242-3).

Peafield BridgeBridge · 461 yd

Explorer Tom Peafield Bridge in Ballysimon has a superstition that says if you kiss the arch you’ll find love. Locals swear by it but the stone is getting tired of the lipstick. Perfect spot to practise your best dramatic bridge-crossing walk while looking mysterious and slightly damp.

Explorer Tom House, Farm house in Garryglass is feuding with the next village over who stole their best scarecrow’s hat. It’s got irregular windows that look like they’re squinting at you suspiciously. Bring biscuits for the imaginary cows and leave them by the outbuildings for good luck.

Saint Mary Magdalen's Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 1743 ydSunninghillHouse · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Sunninghill in Newcastle is an International Style house that looks like it just walked off a fashion runway. Two brothers built it for their jobs at Rank Mills, so they had cash to burn. Go before the tourists figure out how cool it is.

Jackie PowerMemorial · 1.8 miCastle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in Rathurd is having a rivalry with a more famous place down the road, but it’s too busy being a house to care. The circular shape is just its way of saying 'go around me.' Find a local and ask them the real story, then come back and tell me.

Castle Troy (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 2.0 mi

Explorer Tom Castle Troy would ask Saint Patrick to bless its foundation stones. It stands on the Shannon bank, having survived since 1197 without breaking a sweat. Go with someone who loves old stuff and watch them melt.

Áine and Gearóid Iarla: Lough GurLegend location · 8.9 mi

Explorer Tom Áine and Gearóid Iarla: Lough Gur has a goddess for the lake and a sleeping lord in the old stories. I thought I was coming to admire water and stones. Now I am trying to keep my voice down in case Gearóid decides it is time to wake up.
