Church in Kilmovee

Situated towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope. This is an early ecclesiastical site which may have had an oval ecclesiastical enclosure (WA008-030002-) originally, but this is now truncated at S by an E-W field bank. It is a D-shaped, grass-covered area (dims. 58m E-W; 22m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.2-0.5m) with slight traces of an external fosse (Wth c. 3m) W-N-E. There is a mound (WA008-030006-) (diam. 5.5m; H 0.3m) towards the centre. A D-shaped bullaun stone (WA008-030003-) of Old Red Sandstone conglomerate (dims. 0.4m x 0.33m) with a single basin (diam. 0.3m; D 0.15m) which is truncated at one side is built into the W face of the E wall of a NNW-SSE lane immediately to the W of the enclosure. A second larger bullaun stone (WA008-030004-) (dims. 0.95m x 0.65m) of conglomerate with a single basin (dims. 0.30-0.34m; D 0.8m) is in the W face of the E wall of the lane, c. 35m from the junction with the E-W public road to the S. There is local knowledge of 'hollow sound' under the lane immediately W of the enclosure which may be a Man-made underground passage (WA008-030007-). A well (WA008-030005-) which is now blocked is located at the W side of the lane near the possible souterrrain but is not regarded as holy. Archaeological testing (98E0558) produced evidence of furnaces (WA008-052----) c. 85m to the NW of the church (Pollock 2000). Further archaeological testing (11E0077) c. 50m to the E produced no related material, but in an assessment Pollock concludes that the site might not be ecclesiastical, (Pollock 2011).
