Avonmore House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1890, facing south, end bays having gables and double-height canted-bay windows, east elevation also having canted-bay window, gabled full-height stairs return to rear, and having single-bay two-storey addition to west end of rear elevation and lean-to three-bay single-storey addition to rest of rear. Gabled bays to east and west side elevations. Hipped slate roof with decoratively carved timber bargeboards with finials to all gables, clay ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks. Pitched slate roofs to gables and to two-storey addition and stairs return. Painted rendered walls, roughcast to rear elevation, with render plinth course. Bay windows have moulded render cornices, bay window of east elevation also having string course, and front elevation first floor windows having render panels to aprons. Timber sliding sash one-over-one pane windows throughout with render sills, having paired slender openings over entrance doorway. Segmental-headed window to centre of east bay window, with moulded rendered window surround having panelled pilasters with roundel motifs, and triple keystone. Oculus to upper gable of east elevation. Tudor-arched window opening to stairs return, having margined window with stained glass. Recessed segmental-headed entrance doorway with chamfered surround, render label-moulding with ornate stops, paned overlight, sidelights with panelled timber risers, limestep step and threshold, and replacement glazed timber door. Segmental-headed doorway to east elevation, with overlight having decorative glazing, timber panelled double-leaf door, and cut limestone step and threshold. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge to north, with canopy to entrance, return to rear and single-bay two-storey extension to sloping south end, having skirt artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, timber bargeboards and finial to canopy, roughcast rendered walls, and square-headed replacement uPVC windows having render label-mouldings and sills, and round-headed door opening having glazed overlight and half-glazed timber panelled door.

This substantial house is distinguished by its gabled end-bays with canted-bay windows, is typical of Victorian domestic architecture. A Gothic theme is evident with the label-mouldings, carved bargeboards and ornate dressings, providing a decorative focus for the house. The site retains its gate lodge, whose symmetrical façade is enlivened by the label-mouldings and entrance canopy.
