Why it mattered
house — Summerhill Terrace matters for the exact reasons given in its official assessment, rather than merely because it is an old structure. The source records: A house erected under the aegis of Alderman Thomas Toole (----) representing an integral component of the late nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of Waterford with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form; the conventional Georgian glazing patterns; and the roof showing a finish of large slate. NOTE: "The Irish Builder" published a notice that 'the Corporation of Waterford are about to erect twenty-five labourers' cottages. The plans have been prepared by the Borough Surveyor' (The Irish Builder 15th March 1890, 76). It is very likely… This explains what the place adds to local life, the street or the surviving built history.
