Holy well in Iskaroon

Situated at the S edge of a fairly level landscape with a small canalised stream c. 70m to the S. St Bridget’s Well is c. 30m W of the church (ME030-029----) and is attached to a N-S drain at a point where it turns W and then resumes a S course. It was overlooked by an elm tree in the nineteenth century when the inscribed stone (ME030-019002-) was originally kept there (Cogan 1867 2, 269). No well structure is now visible. St Brigid’s Well is associated with St Brigid of Kildare, a prominent early Irish Christian saint linked to numerous holy wells and healing traditions. The well is traditionally believed to have curative properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and general health, and was likely a site of pilgrimage and ritual washing.
