Grave Yard

Near the top of a short gentle E-facing slope, in tillage, near the centre of a very large but levelled early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD035-012, 2-). Shown on the 1st ed. (1839) of the OS 6-inch map as a triangular area (est. c. 40m E-W; est. max. c. 30m N-S), but recorded as circular on the current ed. (1939) of the map. A raised area (diam. 40m; H 2.5m) is enclosed by a modern stone wall, with access steps at NW. The interior is very uneven underfoot and rises to a level rectangular area (18m E-W; 12m N-S) which may be the location of the levelled Ardscull church (KD035-012001-). Marked burials are concentrated in the S-half of the graveyard and the earliest noted date to the 18th-century. The medieval borough of Ardscull (KD035-012003-) may have been located in the vicinity of this church and graveyard. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 04 December 2013
