Church in Ardscull

In Ardscull Graveyard (KD035-012004-) which lies near the centre of a very large, but levelled, multivallate early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD035-012002-). The historically attested to borough of Ardscull (KD035-010002-/KD035-012003-) may have been located in the vicinity of the church. According to Bradley et al. (1986a, Vol. I, 29), the first recorded reference to the church of Ardscull occurs in a list of the deaneries of the diocese of Dublin, probably dating to the later 1270’s, in which the church was noted as belonging to the common fund of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. While the same situation obtained in 1294, by the 16th-century Ardscull was recorded as a chapel of the mother-church of Moone (op. cit.). No visible surface trace of the church survives.
