What is recorded here

Detached single-bay single-storey stone former forge, built c. 1400, now a ruin. Pitched roof covering missing, extensive vegetation growth on stone vault below, possible chimney on ridge concealed by vegetation. Uncoursed rubble limestone walling, oblong plaque over door on north gable with inscription (illegible). Square-headed opening on west elevation partially blocked. Pointed-arch doorway on north gable, dressed stone surround. Fronting road, tree against north-west corner at field entrance, wrought-iron gate mounted on south-east corner.
This building apparently functioned latterly as a forge otherwise little appears to be known about it. The inscribed plaque, dressed stone door surround and vaulted interior all seem to suggest both antiquity and importance.
