Enclosure in Devlis

This record refers to an enclosure noted here by Knox (1911, 337) in the early 1900’s. He described it as a much ruined rectangular, platform-like enclosure scarped out of the lower E end of an esker, which was surrounded by marshy ground on three sides; it was located ‘in a field called Paurkeen Sam, “Sam’s little park” or “field”.’ The rectangular platform (c. 37m E−W; c. 17m N−S) was defined on the N, E and S sides by scarps (H 1.8-2m), with ‘a slight trace of a bank on the top of the eastern scarp’. On the W side there was what seemed to be a ‘great rampart’ scarped into the rising slope of the esker (Knox 1911, 337).
