Cross-slab in Skreen

The belfry stage of the tower of Skreen church (ME032-047003-) originally had two openings on each wall, but only the N ones survive complete, with a re-used cross-slab in the mullion. It has been modified (dims 1.4m x 17.5m; T 0.2m), and is the only physical evidence of the early church. This cross-slab likely dates to the early medieval period, possibly 8th to 11th century, and was originally a Christian memorial or liturgical stone, later re-used in the church tower. Its cross may symbolize Christian faith and serve as a marker of sacred space.
