Abbey

Situated on a ridge of rock outcrop at the S end of Bran Lough (dims c. 700m NE-SW; c. 200m NW-SE) with the SW angle of the lake c. 100m to the E. It was known as Shawn clogh na Ghranseagh - old stones of the grange (OS Name Books, No. 84, 190, 265), and Grange townland is just to the S and W. This was reputedly a grange or outfarm of Augustinian canons, but its mother-house is not known, and the surviving feature need not have been a church. A rectangular roofed structure (dims c. 15m NW-SE; c. 5m NE-SW) is depicted on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map. A single length of mortared limestone wall (L 7.5m; Wth 0.8m; H 2.4m) with an opening (Wth 1.4m), which may be a destroyed doorway or window, survives.
