Well in Clashnevin

Probably Mid - Late Bronze Age, a large circular well 7m x 8m x 2m deep with a clear step / shelf half way down and a ramp leading down to the W. This provides access for water that currently stands just above the step level. Fills of base consisted of a few random branches, leaves, snail shells and lots of grey silts. Fills appear to be waterlain and mainly derived from edge collapse (the geology is siltysand). However, the vertical edges would imply that the lower levels (and possibly the upper) could have been lined - perhaps with wattle. Many fills contained some animal bone showing the area was not abandoned but seems to have been used continuously. In phase 2 this well was filled in and replaced with a burnt mound (TN021-103001).
