Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1920, with maker's mark to shaft, with domed cap with finial, and curved cowtail handle. Set on metal plate within concrete base, with rectangular cast-iron trough to base with maker's mark, flanked by cast-iron bollards. Rubble stone boundary wall to rear. Located at road junction north of Drumcattan Catholic Church.

Water pumps once played an important social and functional role in Ireland providing a communal water source. Located at a crossroads, it was a critical focal point within the surrounding rural hinterland, and it serves as a reminder of this today. Unlike post boxes which were commissioned centrally, pumps can provide interesting examples of local ironwork, like this one, manufactured by Gaskin Brothers of Park Street, Dundalk, County Louth. The curved handle enlivens this functional object.
