Fane River Bridge

Single-arch stone railway bridge, built 1849, carrying embanked Dundalk to Enniskillen railway line over River Fane. Segmental arch, having margined rock-faced rusticated voussoirs. Splayed buttressing walls to embankments to east elevation, with chamfered copings. Dressed snecked stone walls, rubble stone soffit with cut-stone impost course. East parapet wall missing, west parapet wall replaced in mass concrete, with chamfered stone capping.

The simple form of this bridge is typical of several bridges on this railway line. It shows evidence of highly skilled craftsmanship in its stone masonry. The rusticated voussoirs are given recessed edges, enhancing and emphasising the formal properties of the structure. The massive piers and heavy rustication give an impression of strength. A visual reminder of the Great Northern Railway, formerly the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway. Like many railways in Ireland, it closed in the mid-twentieth century, closing to passenger traffic in 1957 and to freight in 1959.
