What is recorded here

Phase 2 excavations were undertaken by John Tierney of Eachtra Archaeological Projects under licence No. E4000 along 17.1 km (Contract 1) of the 35-km N7 Castletown to Nenagh (Derrinsallagh to Ballintotty) national road scheme commissioned by Laois County Council and the National Roads Authority. Contract 1 comprises the western half of the scheme and runs from Clashnevin to Castleroan passing through Tipperary North and Offaly county border regions. The area of excavation at Loughan measured 20m by 15m. Four pits, three posts and two hearths were recorded in the area of the excavation. One of the driven posts cut a pit. No structure was discernible. The driven posts may have functioned as markers for the hearths (Bennett 2011, 300). Compiled by Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision : 12 November 2011
