Barrow

Barrow, unclassified

What is recorded here

Barrow is a barrow (unclassified) in Cloghanstown, County Westmeath, Ireland. The site is situated on a ridge in undulating pasture, offering views in all directions and overlooking the valley of the River Deel to the east. It appears as a small, roughly circular mound approximately 18 metres in overall diameter on the 1913 edition of the Ordnance Survey twenty-five-inch map, a form that suggests it may have been a burial mound. A 1970 inspection recorded the monument as levelled with no surface remains visible, noting that the site lay on the upper edge of a ravine stripped of topsoil for sand quarrying.
Situated on a ridge, in undulating pasture, with good views in all directions and overlooking the valley of the River Deel to E. Annotated ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as and depicted as a small, roughly circular-shaped mound (approx. overall diam. 18m) on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. The depiction of the monument on the OS 25-inch map suggests that this may have been the remains of a burial mound or possible barrow. Levelled monument described in 1970 as no surface remains visible. The site was on the upper edge of a ravine which has been stripped of topsoil for the purpose of sand quarrying. There was a large quarry hole at the WNW end of the cleared area and visible in the face of this is the cross-section of a steep, flat-bottomed fosse. The fill consists of layers of fine silt with specks of charcoal and layers of rough gravel and large stones. Area of levelled monument is visible as a large quarry, on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 10 July 2019
