What is recorded here
Mill at Aghafad had no handy water power, so the whole business depended on the breeze. Elsewhere, a fine calm morning was a blessing. Here, it was the staff arriving to find that the weather had resigned.
Remains of freestanding round-plan windmill, built c.1760. Roofless. Rubble limestone walls. Square-headed slit window openings to first floor. Two opposed square-headed door openings to ground floor. Sited on elevated, exposed site.
This mill is of architectural interest in illustrating the design of a mid-eighteenth-century windmill. It demonstrates both the importance of cereal growing in the area, and the lack of water power in this locality. With its exposed site it acts as a local landmark and is one of the few windmills in the county.
