Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Mullaghmeen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for us. They belong to the hidden people, and they watch for greed. This is a warning, not a wonder. Stay back, be kind, and leave the fort alone.
Located on a SW-facing slope. It is depicted as an embanked oval enclosure (ext. dims c. 30m N-S; c. 20m E-W) only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’. A portion of the bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1m) survives at S (Chord 9.3m ENE-WSW). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 31 July 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
