What is recorded here
This was possibly a tower house which was occupied by Thomas Fleming in 1561. In September 1599 Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone and then in rebellion, parleyed with Richard Deveroux, Earl of Essex and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in the castle of Garret Fleming at Lagan for two days (Shirley 1845, 108-11) after their initial meeting at the ford of Bellaclinthe. According to the OS Name Books (CLAJ 1916, 13) its remains were still visible on the S bank of the Lagan River in 1836 and the Fleming coat of arms was carved on a stone (LH013-001002-) which was on the site of the castle (Stubbs 1910, 292). No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
