Killanna Well

Situated on a N-facing slope which continues down to a stream running along the base of a field boundary. A deep well which is clogged with muck and dung. There is stone walling around the well and a flat lintel roof on top of which are heaped a number of loose stones. A pattern to St Anne's well was held on the 15th of August (O'Neill 1976, 63). Linked to St. Killian (or Cillian), an early Irish saint associated with several holy wells in Ireland, the well is traditionally visited for cures related to skin ailments and general well-being. Locally, it was once a site of pilgrimage, with offerings of coins and cloth left at the well as acts of devotion.
