What is recorded here

Situated just off the summit of a small N-S drumlin ridge on the NW-facing slope, with higher ground c. 250m to the SE. It is depicted as a small circular embanked area (diam. c. 15m) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’ and as a small enclosure defined by field banks on the 1907 edition. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 14m) defined by an earthen bank (int. H c. 0.6m; ext. H 1.2 SW-NW to c. 2.1m at NE), and an outer fosse (Wth c. 1.5m; ext. D c. 0.9m) E-SW but it was absent SW-N. Archaeological testing (00E0515) in Skeahorn townland c. 100m to the NW produced no related material (Coughlin 2002) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
