What is recorded here

Situated at the crest of the NW-facing slope of a N-S ridge. The parish church of Lisnakill (WA017-023001-) is within a rectangular graveyard (WA017-023002-) defined by a stone wall or stone-faced earthen bank, which was built since c. 1840 at the behest of a Mrs. Margaret Power, according to a plaque. On the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map the graveyard is a circular area (diam. c. 45m). Archaeological testing (98E0048) immediately to the S of the graveyard produced no archaeological material (Scully 1998). Scully, O. (1998) Lisnakill, Butlerstown. Adjacent to church. in I. Bennett (Ed.) Excavations 1998: summary accounts of excavations in Ireland, 206, No. 633. Wordwell. Bray.

DolmenPortal tomb · 1014 yd

Explorer Tom Gaulstown Dolmen is stuck in a fairy dispute over parking rights for its massive roofstone. It’s facing the hillside like it’s eavesdropping on the next ridge’s gossip. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.

Gaulstown Portal TombArchaeological place · 1027 yd

Explorer Tom Gaulstown Portal Tomb has a family tree that is ninety percent invented by my uncle, who also claims he knows the king. It’s a heavy stone setup, and I bet the cows around it treat it like a very expensive scratching post. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals.

Pembrokestown HouseCountry house · 1142 yd

Explorer Tom Pembrokestown House in Gaulstown has a feud between two families over who owns the view because one thinks they’re better than the other. It’s got that villa-like alignment which is basically fancy for a house, so just take a photo from the public ground and don’t go taking sides in their little argument.

Whitfield HouseOutbuilding · 1.0 mi

Explorer Tom Whitfield House in Dooneen Kilmeadan is actually a stable where a matchmaker once paired off half the village’s eligible bachelors. The red brick and rubble stone mix looks like a fashion disaster that somehow worked, and I respect it. It’s got more style than most people know how to use.

Sugar Loaf RockMountain / peak · 1.6 mi

Explorer Tom Sugar Loaf Rock would introduce itself as a confectionery expert with a rocky foundation, telling you it’s sweeter than it looks on the inside. It’s basically a rock that thinks it’s a dessert and expects you to lick it gently. Have a look and decide if I was lying.

Mount Congreve GardensVisitor attraction · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Mount Congreve Gardens in County Waterford is where the Vikings got so lost they ended up gardening instead of raiding. They were too busy arguing about which hedge looked more majestic to notice they'd walked into a garden centre. Stop the car, it's worth the hazard lights.

Monterey Cypress1.9 mi

Explorer Tom Monterey Cypress in County Waterford has made a New Year's resolution to stop being so pointy, but it doesn’t seem to be working out for him. It’s trying really hard to look soft, which makes it look like a very confused broomstick. Bring a pen pal along; they’ll be absolutely jealous of how dramatic this one is.

Sweet michelia2.0 mi

Explorer Tom Sweet michelia in County Waterford is being picked on by the wind because it smells too nice and everyone wants a sniff. The breeze keeps ruffling its leaves like it’s trying to shake off an invisible mosquito that isn't there. Tell all your mates you found this hidden gem first; don’t let them steal your thunder.

CastleCastle, unclassified · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in Kilmeadan has a bird that refuses to leave, even though the castle is mostly just a suggestion of a building. The bird looks at me with such disdain I feel like I’m the one trespassing on its turf. Pack a picnic and an excuse.

Corluddy Castle (in Ruins)Castle, tower house · 3.5 mi

Explorer Tom Corluddy Castle has been hiding a scandal for centuries. Probably a bad bet on horses in 1600 that nobody admitted to. It’s just sitting there, looking vaguely guilty and very muddy. Pop by and tell it it's looking well.

Doneraile WalkWalking route · 4.5 mi

Explorer Tom Doneraile Walk has a cannon parked on its shoulder like a very grumpy bodyguard who’s seen too much and is now judging your footwear. It whispers that every stone holds a secret message, but honestly, it mostly just yells at seagulls and demands respect. Walk past slowly like you're in a film.

Newtown CoveBeach / strand · 5.2 mi

Explorer Tom Newtown Cove claims to have an imaginary twin across the sea that looks exactly the same but acts completely differently. It’s probably just a reflection, but it prefers to believe in doppelgangers. Bring wellies and low expectations, leave delighted.
