Lough Clean is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular feature (dims c. 420m NW-SE; c. 180m NE-SW; with an arm (dims c. 500m x c. 60-120m) extending E from its S end. The E arm is now almost dried up and the W arm is almost divided into two portions where the crannog is located. It is now a circular overgrown area (diam. 22m N-S; H 1.5m) with no structural features visible, but the matrix does contain ash and charcoal. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
