Historic building

Freestanding square-plan limekiln, built c. 1800. Battered coursed rubble sandstone walls, with round draw arch having roughly dressed sandstone voussoirs.

This limekiln is solidly constructed and is indicative of the quality of nineteenth-century craftsmanship and engineering skills. The use of burnt limestone for agriculture and building became widespread in the nineteenth century. The structure presents an interesting silhouette in the landscape.
