During the Irish War of Independence in 1920, Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteers ambushed British forces at Clonmult in County Cork. The ambush resulted in the deaths of several British soldiers and demonstrated the IRA's growing effectiveness in guerrilla warfare against British rule.
