Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Friarstown (clanwilliam By., Roxborough Ed)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mature beech trees crowd the perimeter of a low hill in Friarstown, hiding a thirty-one-metre oval scarped from the earth. People called it a fairy fort, yet the smooth southern dip suggests human hands quarried stone rather than magical creatures dancing. The ringfort stands in rolling pasture, waiting for someone to remember that fairies are often just forgotten neighbours.
Situated atop a low hill, in gently rolling pasture, with good views to E, S and W, with mature beech trees grow on the perimeter and in the centre. The monument consists of an oval area (31m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 2.8m; H 0.8m). A dip in the scarp at S (Wth 5m) might be the result of quarrying.
