Bawn in Raheen is a circular grassy enclosure on high ground in County Limerick, holding the buried footings of a tower house and bawn wall beside the medieval ruins of Cahervally Church. The exact age and purpose of the outer ring remain uncertain, perhaps an older ringfort reused by later builders or a purpose-made defensive court. Standing within its shallow curve, you can still picture people moving between the church and the house, watching the countryside from above while the land kept their shapes hidden beneath grass.
Situated on high ground with commanding views of the surrounding countryside with rock outcropping that has been quarried into located immediately to N and S. Medieval ruins of Cahervally Church (LI013-101004-) and graveyard (LI013-101004-) 50m to ENE. Only the grass-covered wall footings of a tower house (LI013-101003-) survives standing on the NE corner of a raised circular shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 36m N-S; 33.6m E-W; H 1.7m) which served as the bawn of the castle. There is a gap at N (Wth. 2.7m) which may represent an entrance feature.
It is uncertain whether the enclosure predates the tower house and was originally built as a ringfort or possibly an Anglo-Norman ringwork (LI013-101002-) which was then reused as the bawn of the tower house by the construction of a wall running along the edge of the enclosure. The grass-covered wall footings (H 0.4m) of this bawn wall running around the edge of the enclosure are visible today. Alternatively the enclosure could be contemporaneous with the construction of the tower house and bawn.
