What is recorded here
Circular stone wall, thirty-four metres across, still stands on the Cork hillock, guarding a rectangular foundation and a low D-shaped platform beside its south wall. The shape suggests a small church, but the platform may mark a children's burial ground, turning worship into loss and memory. A narrow southwest gap admits whoever comes to stand inside the circle, facing the sky and the dead at once.
In pasture, atop hillock with commanding view in all directions. Circular enclosure (34.5m N-S; 25.5m E-W) defined by dry stone wall (H 1.1m; Wth 1.6m); narrow entrance (Wth 1.5m) to SW. In centre, sod-covered foundations of rectangular structure (10m E-W; 7.6m N-S) with low D-shaped platform (8.6m E-W; 9m N-S) adjoining S wall. This latter may be site of a children's burial ground (CO141-029002-) marked on O.S. map (1944); also possibly remains of small church (CO141-029003-). Low rectangular mound in NW quadrant (H 0.25m; 5.4m NE-SW; 2.5m SE-NW); two recumbent stones just inside enclosing wall to N.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
