Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curragh (carbery West (w.d.) By.) stood on an east-facing slope beside the Ilen river until fence removal levelled its circular earthworks. The vanished rath may have sheltered people, excluded strangers, or marked a boundary between neighbourhoods. Its absence does not erase the shape; it returns the story to memory, where the fort can still be walked, imagined and remembered.
In tillage, on E-facing slope, c. 100m SW of Ilen river. Marked as circular enclosure on OS 6-inch map (1842). Levelled, probably during field fence removal; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
