Earthwork in Ballyconra

In the field surrounding the medieval church of Aharney (KK009-013001-) and its graveyard (KK009-013002-) there are numerous earthworks which are likely to represent settlement. These earthworks have been identified through aerial photography (CUCAP, AYP 8, 1971) and on Digitalglobe satellite imagery (viewed 5 September 2013), as well as being visible on the ground. A large sub-rectangular area (dims. c. 290m NW-SE; c. 145m NE-SW) is visible, the SW sector of which is occupied by the medieval church and graveyard. Several roughly parallel banks appear to run NE-SW from the southern part of the W edge of this sub-rectangular area and there are the foundations of a small building (KK009-013009-), possibly a house site, 14.5m WNW of the NW angle of the stone walled graveyard. A hollow-way (KK009-013008-) is also visible on the ground running roughly N-S from the S towards the SW angle of the graveyard. A row settlement (KK004-046----) identified by geophysics (Nicholls 2017 unpublished Geophysical report; Deery and Crowley 2017 unpublished EIS) c. 250m N of the church and graveyard is probably related to these earthworks.
