Cremation pit in Derrybane

11 pits in a cluster of which 9 appear to be for cremation or cooking - probably Bronze Age. Lots of cremated bone. One saucer shaped pit appears to have stakes in it as if was a charcoal kiln. No pottery or other significant finds. Around 20 cremations in small, unlined pits. Each one is clearly visible with a dark, charcoal rich fill and occasional burnt bone. No great quantities of burnt bone have been found. One pit contains the remains of a complete pot (top truncated by ploughing). Occasional large, sunken hearth-ovens. Many blobs of whitish silts proved to be natural upwelling of water that had leeched the natural (silty-sand) geological drift. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
