Church in Ryves Castle

Westropp (1904-5, 451-2) recorded the following details about Ballyscaddan; 'Bealanescadane, 1657; in explanation of D.S. (A), 54. Ballinescaddan, 1666 (Act Sett.). Locally Bealagh na Sgadan, Ford mouth of the herrings. There is no reason to adopt this difficult translation, as a family called "Scadan" and "Hareng" is found in Tipperary in mediaeval times, and the place may be named from one of these. Some say that this was Kilrath, near Duntrileague. The -Church of St. Calman; no proof is given. Site A graveyard, having monuments of the Ryans, 1705-79'.
