In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that the ‘ruins of an old Castle are seen in the southwest of the above townland. The west wall and portions of the north and south ones are all that now remain. The greatest height of this building is at present fifty feet [15m]. The thickness of the walls is five and a half feet [1.6m]’ (O’Flanagan 1929, 97; OSL Effin Parish). Westropp (1906-7, 193) recorded the following details about Ardskeagh Castle in the townland of Brickfield (Baile an Bhaoilligh) or Kilbigley; 'Ardskeagh C[astle]. in Kyllbyggeley (Peyton, p. 238)'.
