Castle Oliver rose in 1845 as a glittering entertainment palace for the Oliver Gascoigne sisters, who also painted its own stained glass and back-painted fireplace panels. Elizabeth lived there with her husband while her sister Mary Isabella remained in Yorkshire, publishing a respected wood-turning book under a male name. The castle later passed through the Trench family, suffered decay and theft, then returned to life through successive owners who repaired its rooms and recovered much of its original splendour.
