Bullaun stone in Crough (decies Without Drum By.)

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

Four bullaun stones of coarse conglomerate, one unfinished, the others with one, two and three basins, are in the interior of possible ecclesiastical enclosure (WA014-018001-). An area of rock outcrop (diam. 2.3m; H c. 0.3m) at the centre may be further evidence of the production of bullaun stones. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 17 November 2010
Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual purification or as holy water fonts in monastic or ecclesiastical settings. Their association with religious practice suggests they may have had both practical and symbolic roles in local Christian communities.
