Kilcomeragh is a vanished castle hidden inside a private garden at the foot of Crough Hill, where Darby O’Brien owned a large slate house in 1641. Tradition claims Peter Anthony lived there in 1643 until Royalists under Sir Charles Vavasour burnt it, yet no wall or trench remains visible for anyone to point at. The mountains may be swallowing the story as often as people tell it.
Located in a private garden on a slight prominence, at the base of the SE-facing slope of Crough Hill, which is a low NW-SE spur of the Monavullagh Mountains. A castle was owned by Darby O'Brien in 1641 and it was described as 'a large slate house' with a bawn c. 1655 (Simington 1942, 78). It is said to have been occupied by a Peter Anthony in 1643 when it was burnt by a party of Royalists under Sir Charles Vavasour (Anon 1906, 75). It is not visible at ground level.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
