Bullaun stone in Crough (decies Without Drum By.)

Four bullaun stones of coarse conglomerate, one unfinished, the others with one, two and three basins, are in the interior of possible ecclesiastical enclosure (WA014-018001-). A subrectangular stone (dims. 1.2m x 1.1m) has two oval basins (each: dims. 0.4m x 0.28m; D 0.11; 0.13m), one perhaps damaged. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 17 November 2010

Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual purification or as holy water fonts in monastic or ecclesiastical settings. Their association with religious practice suggests a spiritual or liturgical function within the enclosure.
