Bolies House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1890. L-plan, remodelled c.1860, cantilevered porch to south c.1990, pitched roofed porch to north elevation. Hipped slate roof, clay ridge and hip tiles, painted smooth rendered chimneystacks, uPVC rainwater goods, dentilled cornice to eaves. Painted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling, painted roughcast render to rear (north) elevation. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted moulded smooth rendered architraves, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows to ground floor, two-over-two sliding sash windows to first floor, single round-headed window opening to north elevation. Square-headed door opening, painted timber door with two vertical raised-and-fielded panels flanked by painted engaged column and plain-glazed sidelights surmounted by dentil cornice, flanked in turn by large pilasters supporting cantilevered hipped roof porch; limestone threshold. Red brick outbuildings to north-west, pitched corrugated-iron roofs. Former avenue to front of house no longer used, former entrance to west, painted rendered boundary walls, flat limestone coping, accessed through squared gate piers with dressed limestone domed caps, cast-iron gates. House surrounded by fields, accessed by drive to rear

Bolie House has been modified over the decades but retains many interesting features of note. The classical proportions of the front elevation are enlivened by rendered details and the classical entrance door though somewhat altered by the addition of the cantilevered porch; the rear (north) elevation is striking in regard to the lack of fenestration, an unusual and notable feature. The red brick outbuildings contribute to its architectural merit as they are part of the original site context.
