Ashtongrove

Detached five-bay two-storey country house, built c. 1810, with single-bay two-storey stair return and multiple-bay two-storey extension at right angles to rear (north) elevation. Skirt artificial slate roof with overhanging sheeted eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with painted rubble stone walls to rear. Square-headed openings with six-over-six and nine-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Round-headed stairlight to rear with nine-over-six pane with spoked fanlight timber sliding sash window. Square-headed openings to extension with replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed opening to front elevation with recessed timber panelled half-glazed door and overlight having render door surround comprising fluted pilasters and cornice. Approached by flight of limestone steps. Elliptical-arched carriage arch to north-west leading to rear yard surrounded by rubble stone walls. Gable-fronted outbuilding to north-west of yard with bellcote to front gable, pitched slate roof with recent roof lights, rubble stone walls, square-headed opening and elliptical-arched openings with timber fittings. Three-bay two-storey outbuilding with external staircase attached to taller three-bay two-storey outbuilding to north of yard, having pitched slate roofs, rubble stone walls and square-headed openings.

Tall openings, skirt roof, symmetrical façade and proportions typical of country houses of its time. Retains much of its form, which is enhanced by retention of timber sash windows. Decoration restrained and focuses eye on central doorcase, adding to classical appearance. Outbuildings to rear add context.
