Water pump in Town Parks stands on Athboy’s Fair Green with a curved handle and a pointed little cap. It looks ready to bid at an auction, which is awkward for a pump: someone else lifts your arm and suddenly you own six heifers.

This cast-iron waterpump makes a positive contribution to the streetscape of the Fair Green in Athboy. The decorative detailing, such as the banding and fluting add artistic interest to this functional object. Waterpumps played an important social and functional role in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, by providing a communal water source.
