Vent pipe in Celbridge Abbey has a fluted pedestal and fancy mouldings for a job that involved airing the drains. Whoever ordered it was the sort who’d put a silver lid on a bucket and ask you to pass the tureen.
Freestanding cast-iron vent pipe, c.1880, comprising fluted pedestal with inscription, moulded necking and cylindrical shaft over having moulded necking. Now disused. Road fronted on grass verge.
This vent pipe, which is now disused, is of social and historical importance, attesting to the late nineteenth-century sewage system built in Celbridge. The pipe now forms a subtle feature on the streetscape, and items of street furniture such as this are often overlooked by the passer-by.
