Toberquan

Situated on a steep NE-facing slope down to a N-S stream. Tobar Chuain is a stone-lined well (dims. 3.05m x 2.45m; D 1.75m), with an ash tree growing from its walls, NE of the church site (WA003-051001-) within a D-shaped area defined by stone walls. Toberquan is associated with Saint Cainnech, a 6th-century Irish monk and founder of the monastery at Roscrea, and is traditionally believed to have healing properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin. The well's name, Tobar Chuain, reflects its historical link to the saint, and such wells were often sites of pilgrimage and seasonal rituals in early Christian Ireland.
