Ticknevin Bridge

Single-arch hump back road bridge over canal, dated 1796. Roughcast coursed rubble limestone walls between roughcast shallow piers with lichen-spotted cut-limestone stringcourses supporting parapets having lichen-spotted cut-limestone coping centred on cut-limestone oval date stone ("1796"). Single elliptical arch with lichen-spotted limestone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Grand Canal with grass towpath to canal.

A bridge representing an important component of the civil engineering heritage of County Kildare with the architectural value of the composition confirmed not only by the deep grey limestone dressings demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also by the elegant "sweep" of the arch making a pleasing visual statement at a crossing over the Grand Canal: meanwhile, a weathered benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
