The Bungalow

Detached three-bay single-storey red brick house, c.1900, on a symmetrical plan retaining some early fenestration with door opening to centre having single-bay single-storey flanking canted bay windows, single-bay single-storey side elevation to south and two-bay single-storey return to rear to east. Renovated, c.1985, with pair of single-bay single-storey canted bay windows added to return. Gable-ended roofs on an L-shaped plan with slate. Clay ridge tiles. Red brick chimney stacks. Timber bargeboards to gables. Cast-iron rainwater goods on red brick course to eaves. Red brick Running bond wall to front (west) elevation. Red brick course to eaves. Rendered walls to remainder. Unpainted. Shallow segmental-headed openings to canted bay windows. Stone sills. Original 1/1 timber sash windows. Square-headed openings to additional canted bay windows, c.1985. Timber casement windows. Shallow segmental-headed door opening. Replacement timber panelled door, c.1985, with overlight. Set back from road in own grounds.

This house is an attractive small-scale range that has retained most of its original form and some of its original character. The house is of some social and historical significance, reflecting the development of the outskirts of Kildare town in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries, possibly instigated by the establishment of the railway line in the locality earlier in the nineteenth century. The construction in red brick is also of interest, attesting to developments made in the manufacturing industry in the nineteenth century that allowed for the mass-production of economic building materials. The house retains many important early or original salient features and materials, including timber sash fenestration and cast-iron rainwater goods to the slate roof, and forms a picturesque feature on the streetscape.
