(Site of) Castle Cluggin — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Castle Cluggin vanished into a shallow pasture hollow, leaving only a quarried outcrop and a ghost name behind. It may have belonged to Brian O'gCuanach before passing to the Earl of Thomond, yet even that claim rests on pedigree rather than stone. The castle itself refused to be remembered, sinking beneath grass and time while its church and graveyard still stand nearby.

Site of Castle Cluggin described in 1840 as follows; 'the site of a Castle said to have belonged first to Brian O'gCuanach and afterwards to the Earl of Thomond, is shown in the Townland of Castle Cluggin. It is not noticed in the Field Name Books, but it should be shown on the Ordnance Map. It is mentioned in the MS. Pedigree of the O'Briens, Trin[ity] Col.[lege]. H.1,7.' (O'Flanagan 1929, 130). Westropp (1906-7, 104) recorded the following details about a Castlecluggin; '1302 Tohtcloggin. 1655 Cloggin marked, but no C[astle]. shown (Petty, 67). It may, perhaps, be Ballyvalode, as the townlands adjoin [see next section, but seems to be a very uncertain site]'. In pasture, on a gentle NW-facing slope. No surface remains visible of levelled castle. Shallow hollow (dims. 10m N-S; 12m E-W) with natural outcrop protruding from sod, indicates that this area has been quarried. Built initially by Brian Óg Cuanach and later held by the Earl of Thomond, Castle Cluggin is remembered for its historical association with Gaelic lordships in the region, reflecting the power dynamics of medieval Irish chieftains.
