(Site of) Toughcluggin Church — Report the wrong picture

Tuath an Chluigin, the country of the little bell, lost its church before 1840 but kept its name in a graveyard where briars may still hide forgotten stones. The well of the Holy Cross stands nearby, waiting for hands that remember water before walls. What remained was not a building but a boundary between living memory and buried time.

Westropp (1904-5, 439) recorded the following details on Tuoghcluggin; ‘Tohtclogyn, in Tipperary Deanery, 1302; Twogh Cloigin Church, down, 1615; Tuath an Chluigin, ( country of the little bell ' (O'Donovan). Site - It was levelled before 1840. Tobernacruhauneeve [LI024-083----], ' the well of the Holy Cross,' was near the graveyard. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that although this 'is called a Church, it is really a graveyard, without any remains of a church in it' (OSNB, 1690-1). Within graveyard (LI024-082002-). No visible surface trace. Area of briars may obscure ruins. Long, rectangular pillar stone noted within, may be a gravemarker. Other low, uninscribed stones visible in small cleared area. Named 'Tuoghcluggin Church (site of)' on current edition OS 6-inch map. Holy well (LI024-083----) c. 150m to E.
