Ó Ríordáin is the rare man who took Irish poetry out of its cottage and threw it into the world. He wrote Eireaball Spideoige, a novel that sounded like life itself, then killed the pretence for good. The church, the state, the fancy schools, all of it became material for his jokes and his knives. He died young in Cork, which fits. A man that honest cannot keep his bones in one jar.
