Road

In undulating pasture, on the E side of a road. This road is not visible at ground level. It is visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 267-8) as a curvilinear cropmark (L c. 300m) consisting of two narrow parallel lines of dark vegetation, c. 10m apart. The cropmark is parallel to the present road for most of its length but curves gently to the NE at its N end. It is crossed by another similar linear cropmark (L c. 400m NE-SW), the SW end of which joins the present road. No road is indicated on the 1838 or 1941 OS 6-inch map in the vicinity of these cropmarks so it is assumed that they represent a road or earthwork predating the 1838 OS 6-inch map but possibly much older. A circular enclosure (SL033-073002-) lies c. 100m to E.
